The Old World very specifically mentions that Yin Yin fights with Nippon and that 'Nipponese pirates' are an issue for Grand Cathay.

Could this be a hint that one of the race packs after DOW will be Nippon? It certainly has a lot of potential, either as a Lawful Evil Chaos race or as a sort of 'society that Nagash doesn't want you to see' in the shape of a race where Undead and the Living live together in harmony and relative peace?

What do you all think?

No.  But if we're lucky, we might get a few Nipponese units in the DoW themselves.

I could vibe with that.

This is indeed my hope that future DLC will progressively expand the map with if needed barebone versions of the minor races (Snakemen of Khuresh, Kingdoms of Ind including Tigermen, Nippon)

For example, if we get a Dechala/Monkey King/Aislinn DLC,  this will open Khuresh with barebone AI Snakemen factions as antagonists for Monkey King in Mountains of Heaven and Aislinn in the Gates of Calith for example, and as allies to incorporate to their faction for Dechala.

Same thing for Yin, Yin to have Nippon as an antagonist. i don't think it is technically an issue as Chaos Robbie was able to expand the Immortal Empire map in his mod with both Nippon and the lost islands of Tor Elithis:

"We're never gonna say never because there should always be the opportunity to bring these new races in or new nations, but you know I've seen the road map and these nations aren't on there now. There's no plans to do them in the immediate or even long-term future. We've still go so much to do with Cathay. Honestly the stuff I've seen it'll curl your toes in the best possible way. [...] People are kinda desperately hanging on for one of these other nations. [...] Don't lose any sleep, it's not happening anytime soon. Probably never, I'm afraid.

Cathay was a brillant coup for us. Doesn't mean it's gonna be repeated."

I can pull up the second interview where he says the exact same thing about Nippon specifically again.

Unless GW randomly decides to do Nippon, there’s no chance. That won’t happen unless the Old World is a success, and Cathay within the Old World is a success. It’s going to be a long time before either of those things become true, if they do.

Until then they still exist in the lore, and GW will mark on them as flavor notes, just like they did for the Hobgoblins.

Where are you getting Nippon being Chaos or Undead aligned? Just because some of them are pirates that doen't mean that they align with Chaos or Death.

Anyway I think it is doubtful, especially now as I have a feeling that WH3 has shot its chance of expanding its scope ambitiously due to its mismanagement. Ind and Khuresh are far more likely but that isn't saying much, even if I have my fingers crossed that we get all 3 I know that they are very much a long shot.

The Old World has also done that with Hobgoblins, and mentioning neighboring countries is pretty inevitable when it comes to Cathay. That doesn't mean that they will get fleshed out in any capacity.

Nippon is allegedly a place where 'spirits walk around with citizens as a part of its normal life.'

DoW army book describe DoW expedition fighting again Cathay. That was in 1998, so you might get your Nippon in 2046.

And why assume this is referring specifically to the dead? It is likely pointing to spiritual entities, i.e. Yokai, not the departed.

Sorry but what? THink your getting a little confused. OW only released last month, and to my knowledge there was no mention of Nippon in the promo material for it. Unless CA has made a statement in the last few weeks the OW stuff is more recent.

Yes the statements by CA are more recent than the literal announcement of OW, but that is a separate thing, we have no reason to think that CA had access to the full core book of OW 2ish years ago.

There were mentions of Nippon years ago when TOW got announced. That’s when CA confirmed it’s not planned long term.

Yokai are often associated with the dead.
