If you are experiencing stability issues or crashes while playing, there are several basic steps that you should always try to see if they resolve the issue.

GAME CRASHES

If you are experiencing issues with your game crashing or booting you to desktop, there are several steps you can take to try and address a potential issue:

  1. VERIFY THE INTEGRITY OF YOUR GAME FILES. This will help resolve any issues that may have occurred when downloading or unpacking the files.

Steam: Verify Integrity of Game Files
Epic: How do I verify game files in the Epic Games Launcher?
Microsoft Store: How to install and uninstall a PC game on a Windows device

It's usually pretty quick and is a *super* important step to take for *any* Steam game where you're experiencing issues.
  2. CHECK THAT YOUR COMPUTER HARDWARE—PARTICULARLY YOUR GRAPHICS CARD—MEETS THE MINIMUM SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS TO RUN THE GAME. Lower-end systems will have trouble running newer games, so ensure you check that all your components meet the minimum recommended specs.
  3. ENSURE YOU'VE DOWNLOADED THE LATEST GRAPHICS DRIVER UPDATE FOR YOUR CARD. Keeping your video card drivers up-to-date is essential. Visit the website of your card’s manufacturer to download and install the latest graphics driver.
  4. ENSURE YOU'VE DOWNLOADED *ALL* THE LATEST WINDOWS UPDATES. You can search for “Update” in Windows to automatically open the Windows updater. Note that you may need to reboot your PC and run through them a few times to make sure you have all the latest files required to run programs as intended.
  5. CLOSE OUT OF OR DISABLE ANY/ALL BACKGROUND OR THIRD-PARTY PROGRAMS—especially peripheral and gaming hubs. Specifically, issues have been found when running Razer Cortex or Citrix.
  6. ADD THE GAME AS AN EXCEPTION TO YOUR ANTIVIRUS AND FIREWALL PROGRAMS. This will ensure that these programs are not interfering with your ability to launch and play the game.
  7. DISABLE ANY THIRD-PARTY MODS AND RE-LAUNCH THE GAME. Custom mods you’re running may not work (at first), especially after new updates change how the game functions. If you encounter issues following an update, it is recommended that you verify the integrity of the files and temporarily disable your mods until any compatibility issues can be resolved.

PERFORMANCE ISSUES

In addition to the above steps, there are additional steps you can take if you’re experiencing performance dips while playing:

  1. VERIFY THAT YOU ARE NOT RUNNING OUT OF SYSTEM MEMORY (RAM). Even if you surpass the total memory (RAM) requirements, you should still check to ensure you have enough free memory available when playing the game. Open your Task Manager and swap to the Performance tab to verify that you have more than 1GB of free system memory while playing. If you have less, consider closing out background programs or updating your system to avoid stutters or performance hits related to “paging.” (Paging is what happens when your system requires more RAM but doesn’t have enough available, so it temporarily stores information on your drives. When this happens, you will encounter repeated stutters.)
  2. VERIFY THAT YOU HAVE SUFFICIENT VIDEO MEMORY (VRAM). If your graphics card doesn’t have enough VRAM to run the game at your chosen video settings, the game will automatically adjust your graphics during loading screens to avoid “out-of-memory” crashes. (You can bypass this by selecting ‘Unlimited Video Memory’ from the Settings menu.) You can improve your performance by lowering your resolution and graphics setting to avoid stressing your video memory.

For advanced users, you can also ensure that your BIOS is up to date.

⚠ Please ONLY proceed with this if you are confident that you know what you’re doing, as there is the possibility of being left with a non-functional computer if done incorrectly. ⚠

  1. VISIT YOUR MOTHERBOARD MANUFATURER'S WEBSITE AND CHECK FOR NEW VERSIONS OF YOUR BIOS. These updates can offer performance optimisations, stability improvements, or add support for future technologies which you can leverage to further improve performance and reliability.

LONG LOADING TIMES

If you’re encountering long loading times, there are a couple of things that can be done to improve your situation.

  1. INSTALL THE GAME TO A SOLID STATE DRIVE (SSD) OR M2 DRIVE. The significantly improved read/write speeds can drastically decrease loading times over a disk drive or external hard drive.
  2. CHECK THE HEALTH OF YOUR HARD DRIVE. This can be done by installing your drive manufacturer’s proprietary software and checking its condition.
  3. FREE UP MORE RAM FOR THE GAME. By closing out background tasks and freeing up the RAM available to your game, you can significantly decrease your loading times.
  4. ENSURE YOUR HARD DRIVE HAS ADEQUATE SPACE REMAINING. A nearly or entirely full hard drive will not perform as optimally as one with plenty of available space.

LAPTOP PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS

If you are playing the games on a laptop, there are several steps you can take to improve your experience and performance:

  1. ENSURE YOUR LAPTOP ISN'T OVERHEATING. Given the small form factor of a laptop compared to a desktop PC, cooling is always a concern. As your laptop heats up and exceeds certain thermal ranges, it will automatically limit or restrict the power available to the CPU and GPU—artificially reducing their performance—or can crash the operating system.

It’s always advisable to use your laptop manufacturer’s proprietary software to optimise your cooling. This may be done by setting custom fan curve’s so that your laptop’s cooling kicks in earlier and at greater speeds, downclocking/limiting hardware frequencies, or adding an FPS limiter through your GPU control panel.
  2. PLUG IN YOUR LAPTOP. Most (if not all) laptops will artificially limit or restrict power delivery to major components if running directly from the battery. A general rule to follow: when running intensive applications (i.e. games), plug your laptop into the main outlet.
  3. SET UP YOUR POWER PROFILES FOR GAMING. Most manufacturers allow you to set custom power plans/profiles on their proprietary software. It’s recommended that you check the Efficiency, Hybrid, Performance, and Overclock settings to optimize your experience.

STILL NEED HELP?

If none of the above solutions work, we highly recommend reaching out to the SEGA Support Team with the following information:
