Looking Ahead to WARHAMMER III: Thrones of Decay

Hey folks,

With the full reveal of Thrones of Decay starting next week and continuing through April, I wanted to talk with you all about some pricing changes that we’re making for this DLC that we thought would be good to share ahead of our usual reveal business.

Before we get to that, let me quickly say thank you for the reception you gave to our updated Shadows of Change.

When we first launched, we got it wrong, but you gave us the chance to help address that and all of us across Total War were grateful for how warmly you embraced the new content that we added. We hope that decisions like this help to demonstrate our commitment to improving the relationship that we share with you, and we appreciate that actions continue to speak louder than words.

You may have seen the news from SEGA last week of potential changes happening to our teams here at Creative Assembly. No matter the outcome of these changes we will still be a team who love making content for Total War: WARHAMMER III and we hope that continues to shine as we move forward with the project with even more all-new content.

Onto the news we have for you today. We are making a one-time change to the way in which we’ll release Thrones of Decay, and all of us felt that we should talk about that openly with you all before we kick things off.

As announced last year, Thrones of Decay welcomes all-new content for the Empire, Dwarfs and Nurgle, and we’re happy to reveal that each faction's new content will be available to purchase either as a bundle, or on an individual basis i.e. if you only want to play as the Empire, you can buy this section of the DLC as a standalone purchase rather than having to buy everything, allowing you to pick and choose what you want to play. Here's how it'll work:

  • Thrones of Decay will be available to buy as a complete bundle at a discounted rate of $22.92/£19.10/€22.92.
  • Each individual pack will be available to purchase for $8.99/£7.49/€8.99 per pack.
  • If you purchase the packs individually on Steam, you’ll receive a 15% discount on the remaining packs when you complete your collection.

Back when we got started with production on Thrones of Decay close to a year ago, we had envisioned shipping this as one big package just like we did with Shadows of Change, and after talking with many of you these past few months we recognise that these large sized, higher priced packs aren’t always what you’re looking for. So, we’ve decided to do something different just for Thrones, and used this extra time to help show that we were listening to what you had to say.

This is a new approach for us, and something that we’ll have plenty to learn about as we do it, but we think it’s the right approach and something that we feel we can do in response to the pricing changes that we brought in late last year. Giving you more choices about the ways in which you can access all-new content is important to us, and we’re keen to listen in on the conversations that will rise from the back of this news.

We’re already deep into pre-production on our future DLC post-Thrones of Decay, and the current intent is to avoid creating something quite so big in scope so that we can help to keep both the value, and the price right for you.

Speaking of the future, we’ve also been hard at work these last few months re-aligning our vision of what’s yet to come for WARHAMMER III, and as promised back in December, we’ll be back to chat more with you all about where we go next a little while after we launch Thrones of Decay.

In the meantime, we’re looking forward to revealing this new DLC for you next week, and keen to listen in on what you have to say about today's news. Please do join us over on the Total War Discord, or the Total War Forums to share your thoughts - we always appreciate it when you do!

Thanks for reading, we’ll be back early next week with more.

I'm like 95% sure this was already confirmed that they'll be permanent

Some don't see the trickery, but it's there!
The result is that your game costs a fortune, that it's overloaded because you keep adding new features.
You claim to be offering a reduced price, when in fact it's well over the price of mini DLC that isn't even DLC.
Ah, I mourn the good old days when we were honest and made good games with good (and real) DLC. My first TotalWar: Shogun 2
Back then, nobody would have had the audacity to sell a playable faction for a game that had already cost 60€.

I don't intend to come off as a CA shill but the base content of Warhammer 3 is justified as being $60 in my opinion, as is any game with well over 100+ hours of content. This DLC is formatted so that you can purchase chunks of it for only $9 each, not to mention the massive free update that's launching alongside it

I have to seriously commend CA for apologizing about the bad SoC launch, saying that they're going to take in player feedback, and then actually taking in player feedback. I simply can't dog on them here

The price was never the issue. The size of the DLC just did not match the price. Hope that we can get this right in ToD. Good luck CA!

I’m totally happy with what is currently on display for ToD. If it continues to look as up to par as it does now I’m getting everything on release. Looks to be an excellent addition to the game and might actually become my new favourite DLC.

It doesn't come as a surprise that the unexpected scope of ToD threw the roadmap out the window.
The SoC team still worked on it until February, the ToD team is not going to be able to work on anything new until May.
I have no idea how many different teams work on DLC, but if it takes a year for DLCs of the current scope, then I think most players would agree, that a smaller scope is the right call to achieve more frequent content drops.

A sensible way of promoting DLC. It is nice to see CA actually take this route with the current situation in everyone's pockets.

vampire fans want 4 LL CoC style bloodlines and this message make future DLCs look horrible, at least we will not have to buy more chaos content, I have the feeling we have been financing chaos but numbers say we play order/death a lot more

I like this - The reduced full price and the spilt price packages. + now it has more content (compared to SOC launch)

But i feel its a bit ... what word to use... late/paniced reaction/unnecessary.

I mean TOD will have 1.Empire 2.Dwarfs 3.Nurgle - If i have to guess most ppl play atleast 2 of those 3 races. I play 3/3 - Dwarfs and nurgle the most, a bit more rarely the empire.

What I mean is this DLC will have more popular races than the last one. So most people will buy the full thing.
This would have been really good for SOC thou - I don't play Cathat and Kislev, but I do play Tzeentch.

This is not really a complaint just an observation.

I just come here to say that please stick to the 1LL+1LH+1Lord+1Hero+5Units per race formula for post Tod lord pack DLCs. I don't care if it's a 1, 2, or 3- lords pack, I just need that much content (or more if it's possible not less) per race.

Or price things appropriately. I will say that I don't want to bloat rosters just for the sake of filling a quota, though I expect the price to reflect content in the product. If they don't follow this, I don't want to be charged this price. My big concern is whether they will be able to produce enough Cathayan and mono-god faction Lords with this strategy; I do want all of my dragon lords of Cathay if possible, ideally without introducing a bunch of slapdash units that just homogenize factions. At the end of the day, they need to keep listening to fans, and ideally look at why the Larian model is so successful for inspiration as they go forward.

No, I don't care about the price at all. If they had done this formula since WH1, we would not end up missing Master Mutator/Pestilence generic lords for Skaven and generic lords/heroes variants for Green Skins for example. I don't count such things as roster bloat since they are a thing in TT AFAIK and they must not be missing at this point. I'm so glad they added the chaos lord of Tzeentch and Exalted hero of Tzeentch and Changebringers with SoC2, these guys were my most wanted things for Tzeentch that were missing from SoC1. I really want them to keep up this formula so that we won't end up missing important things that existed in TT at the end of the WH3 life.

PS: I want Skaven roster to be completed with missing generic lords (Mutator, Pestilence), Verminlords (All of the variants), Stormfiends (All of the variants), Thanquaol, and Skreech.

Very Games Workshop of @CA to let consumers buy just the units they actually want to use, rather than having to buy the whole lot all at once!

I fail to see how this newer split dlc approach for steam users can be a bad thing, and I appreciate this update @CA_KingGobbo#4380 and the empathy shown.

Almost everything has a higher inflationary cost these days, and smaller chunks of value makes sense. Role on the ToD reveals!

I love the idea of breaking down dlc into being able to buy the specific content you want, will this be done for older dlc like shadows of change or possibly all older dlc which was faction vs faction content?

I've been a longtime player off all the Total War series, and my favorites are Warhammer 1, 2, 3 with more than 4000 hours across all three.  I have loved all of the content DLC and own them all.  Each DLC has continued to make this series better, and better and better.  The last one wasn't as great as some of the greatest hits (like the Vampire Coast) but it was still good, and got better with the patch.  Cool with me if you want to release factions separately, but I will bundle as I want to play with all three races.  (and kill all their new toys too!)

For the future, please do NOT scale back the scope of DLC.  Keep riding this cash cow and your loyal fan base. Sometimes, the squeaky wheel should get a kick, not the grease.  BIG, system changing, map changing, and gameplay changing DLC packs are why I think this series has the BEST DLC across any game,. Frankly, it is why I keep coming back for more.  I stopped buying DLC of some of my other favorite games, like Civ 6, because they went small.  Who cares about 2 new leaders if they don't change the entire game in some way?

Thanks for asking for feedback.
